Director of Finance and Administration
Family Justice, a national nonprofit organization, draws on the strengths of families and neighborhoods to break
cycles of involvement with the criminal justice system. To this end, Family Justice works with families, government
agencies, the private sector, and community partners, providing direct services, offering training and technical
assistance on its methods, and serving as a resource for public policy makers and criminal justice professionals.
We teach government and community-based organizations to tap the strengths of families and social networks by
applying our innovative, cost-effective approach, The Bodega Model®.
In addition to national training and technical assistance work, Family Justice runs two direct-service
centersLa Bodega de la Familia on Manhattan's Lower East Side and Family Bodega, located in the Brownsville/East
New York section of Brooklyn. Led by founder and president Carol Shapiro, the organization has a staff of about 35.
Family Justice has won numerous awards for demonstrating how government agencies can draw on the natural resource
of families and communities to help individuals succeed under community justice supervision and enhance their
family's well-being.
The Director of Finance and Administration should be an analytical, energetic, and productive member of the senior
management team. The right person for this role has the capacity and expertise to lead the organization's finance,
human resources, administrative, and IT functions, while coordinating those with those of the rest of the organization. The right person is also adept at developing and implementing systems, thinking and acting strategically, and staying flexible as the Family Justice grows and develops. The Director of Finance and Administration reports to the Chief Operating Officer and supervises a staff of four.
Responsibilities
- Budgets and financial accountability: The Director of Finance and Administration is responsible for the development
and management of the annual budget as well as long-term, strategic financial planning, and serves as Family Justice's
liaison to financial institutions. The Director also helps develop project budgets and oversee project spending and
collaborates with project directors on financial matters. Working closely with the COO, the Director is responsible
for the integrity of Family Justice's fiscal operations, payroll and the preparation of financial statements,
tax returns, annual audit reports, and all financial reports to funders. The Director also works closely with the
Treasurer and Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees, who provide ultimate oversight of all operations.
Supervision of Comptroller and Grants Manager.
- Human resources: The Director for Finance and Administration develops and implements strategies for the effective
recruitment, assessment, compensation, and professional development of Family Justice staff. The Director also oversees
the management of and revisions to the employee benefit package and organizes orientation activities for new staff.
Additionally, the Director reviews and updates personnel policies and guidelines as necessary and appropriate, and
ensures appropriate record-keeping relating to all personnel issues.
- Office/Administration: The Director for Finance and Administration oversees office management and all internal
administrative functions. This includes ensuring that equipment as well as processes and procedures are operating
effectively. The Director also oversees facility leases, the furnishing and use of Family Justice's three office
locations, and is ultimately responsible for vendors and service providers. Supervision of Office Manager.
- Technology/IT: The Director for Finance and Administration oversees the maintenance and management of
Family Justice's computer and data management systems and also helps plan for the expanding use of technology
in all of Family Justice's work. Supervision of IT Manager.
Qualifications
This position requires a minimum of 8-10 years experience in the field of fiscal management and human resources
in a non-profit setting, with solid knowledge in both areas.

- Extensive experience with recruitment, orientation, and staff development initiatives.
- Extensive experience working with government contracts.
- Solid knowledge of IT and technology issues.

- Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred.

Family Case Manager - Manhattan/Lower East Side
La Bodega de la Familia, a direct service program on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, is a program of Family Justice.
La Bodega works in partnership with government to help families struggling with addiction and/or mental illness and
involved in the justice system. Services include family case management, counseling, 24-hour crisis intervention,
among others.
This position will report to the Program Manager of La Bodega.
Case Manager Responsibilities
- Formulate family action plans.
- Provide family case management.
- Conduct family sessions.
- Work with parole and probation officers to share information and goal-setting.
- Collaborate with collateral agencies, facilitating interagency coordination
to assist families.
- Make home and collateral visits.
- Work within a team to discuss cases and coordinate services.
- Maintain case notes and records.
- Make pre-release visits to families.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Minimum, BA in social services or a related field; experience working with families required, MSW preferred.
- Fluency in English and bilingual (Spanish) required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Senior Family Case Manager - Manhattan/Lower East Side
La Bodega de la Familia, a project of Family Justice, Inc., is recruiting a senior family case manager.
La Bodega de la Familia is a direct service program on the Lower East Side of New York City. A nationally
recognized, innovative, award-winning community justice project, La Bodega works in partnership with government
to offer a family systems and strength-based approach to helping families struggling with addiction and/or
mental illness and involved in the justice system. The program helps individuals under parole or probation
supervision comply with criminal justice mandates by tapping the support of their family members and other
neighborhood resources.
The Senior Family Case Manager will have day to day responsibilities for providing family case management
and other services at La Bodega and will work alongside three Family Case Managers. The Senior Family Case Manager
will carry a slightly smaller (20) caseload than the other Family Case Managers, but will focus on cases with more
complicated issues relating to mental health and substance abuse. This position will report to the Program Manager
of La Bodega and will be supervised by the Clinical Director of Family Justice.
Responsibilities
- Provide family case management: make initial contacts with potential participants and/or family members, formulate family action plans, and conduct family sessions
- Communicate and collaborate with parole and probation officers in regards to visiting families' homes, individual case conferencing, joint family sessions, joint meetings and training, the development of family action plans, and general sharing of information and goal-setting.
- Collaborate with collateral agencies regarding particular cases, facilitating interagency coordination to assist families in streamlining their responsibilities
- Make home and collateral visits
- Work within a team to discuss cases and coordinate services
- Facilitate support groups and workshops as necessary
- Maintain case notes and records on participant/family progress
- Submit monthly statistics
- Forge and maintain close relationships with La Bodega's partners in the community and the criminal justice system
- Work closely with Program Manager to develop referral streams
- Administrative and other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Minimum MSW and 5 years experience working with families required
- Experience in community-based work with one or more of the following: criminal justice involved populations, families, groups, and/or substance users, people with HIV/AIDS, mental illness, public housing, and/or related populations
- Documented experience in the mental health and substance abuse fields
- Knowledge of family-systems work a plus
- Ability to work with a culturally diverse population.
- Organizing/project management experience a plus
- Fluency in English and Spanish required
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Family Case Manager - Brooklyn
The Family Bodega, a project of Family Justice, is recruiting a Family Case Manager for our direct service family
support center in East New York, Brooklyn. We seek a self-motivated individual with strong communication and
interpersonal skills to provide Family Case Management and other services. An innovative community justice
project modeled on Family Justice's original direct-service learning center in Manhattan's Lower East Side
(La Bodega de la Familia), The Family Bodega works in partnership with government to offer a family
systems and strength-based approach to helping families who have loved ones involved in the criminal
justice system and who may be struggling with addiction, unemployment, mental illness and other challenges.
The Family Bodega is located in a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) development in East New York.
The program helps individuals under parole or probation supervision comply with criminal justice mandates by
tapping the support of their family members and other neighborhood resources. As part of a dynamic organization
committed to breaking cycles of intergenerational and intrafamilial criminal justice involvement, the Family
Case Manager will have day to day responsibilities for engaging families, working with them to create Family
Action Plans, supporting them to connect with and coordinate services, and case documentation. This Family
Case Manager will report to the Program Manager of The Family Bodega.
